Nidera launches buy-back contract for ‘Warrior’

Nidera launches buy-back contract for new Group 3 variety ‘Warrior’ There is a clear perception that many of the Nabim Group 3 varieties that have come onto the scene in recent years have not quite ticked all the boxes when it comes to the optimum combination of yield, disease resistance and marketability. This has not been for the want of trying on the part of plant breeders who recognise the potential benefit of bringing a new variety to market that both meets the requirements of growers and flour millers at home and abroad.

As the leading importers of UK milling wheat into Spain, Nidera are regularly requested by plant breeders to evaluate potential Group 3 candidates. This takes place at the laboratory of Senor Jose Angel Carrion, Nidera's in-house flour milling expert, who is based at the Company's facility near Albacete, south-west of Madrid.

One of the newest varieties to arrive on his desk is RAGT-bred "Warrior", which has been listed in Group 3 of the 2010/11 Recommended List. What he has seen so far has impressed him;

"Analysis of the trial samples of Warrior provided by the breeder have been very positive with especially pleasing results coming from the alveograph test, which is the key benchmark for assessing suitability of wheat for flour milling in Spain."

Senor Carrion, who comes from a family of flour millers, knows exactly what the industry is looking for and believes that Warrior has the potential to meet the necessary criteria.

"In all of the samples that we analysed, gluten quality was high with good plasticity and elasticity. The wheat mills easily and produces a high flour yield."

"Of course, the real test will come when we see the first results from commercial-scale production. If these perform in line with our initial analysis, we believe that Warrior can gain a good acceptance amongst Spanish flour millers."

According to the breeder, Warrior has a treated yield equivalent to Robigus, and has much to offer growers seeking extra security without any significant yield penalty. Warrior is the only variety on the 2010/11 RL with a specific recommendation for disease resistance and has the best disease resistance package of any recommended variety, with ratings of 7+ for every foliar disease. Combining this exceptional disease resistance with resistance to orange wheat blossom midge gives the greatest possible flexibility with spray timings.

Against this background, Nidera has already launched a buy-back contract for harvest 2011.
